--- Comment #61 from Ray Mitchell <[email protected]> ---
(In reply to Simon from comment #59)
> Do you use Affa on a regular basis?
I have used it almost since the day it was released so am quite familiar with
it's features.
> What I tried to say was, that this software concept is fantastic.
I agree with that idea, also since day 1, as I was using it when others were
rubbishing it.

Whether human intervention is required or not, is not the only criteria to
judge software acceptability by.
One issue with Affa backing up to a dedicated server, is that all your eggs are
in one basket, if something happens to the backup server, all backups,
including historical original & incremental backups are lost.
USB has the advantage that it can be swapped as often as policy requires, eg 2,
3 or 4 backups disks, and retained indefinitely, with the good part being that
there are redundant copies of backups, & historical information.
These can also be removed & stored off site regularly.
I know a Affa server can be remote, but one of the problems then is that large
changes in data on a daily basis (eg Gb's), can result in a lot of backup data
going across the Internet, slow & potentially costly, & needs duplication at
both ends (& outgoing speed is usually much slower than incoming).
I do know, I have been there , done that etc.
Affa (or an Affa like concept) is good, but does not suit all situations, it is
good but not perfect.
> So lets stop killing each others ideas...
I was not killing your ideas, I believe I was speaking realistically &
factually about matters & what the status quo is.
I doubt very much that Affa will ever become part of the base core software OS,
which comment can be said about most other contribs too, as that is an
underlying SME server policy decision ie to add function via add on contribs.
