I don't know how to get it to sound like the welcome sound it's
supposed to. However, they're probably an option in the KDE Control
Center to turn it off. Look for KDE_Logon or something like that.
Sorry I can't be more specific, but I use Gnome.

Can't help you with this... I don't think there's much that can be
done here until the appropriate drivers are written. I've got a
Lexmark Z22 (USB) that's connected to my mac machine and the drivers
are experimental... color comes out great, but no black... very wird.

I suspect that it will work just the same as under x86. Just run
cdrecord --scanbus and you should see the dev entry for it. Haven't
tried it yet, but I see that the ide-scsi module is loaded so it
should operate the same.
