Problems installing PPC 8.0 on PowerBook G3 (NewWorld/400/128M/6GB/DVD)

It seems that when I go to install Mandrake on this machine I can get so far
as the package install (where it goes to install all the packages I
selected) and then the cdrom drive seems to just powerdown and the install
halts there not resuming even after an hour. This happens on both Mandrake 8
and Yellow Dog 2 ... any suggestions?
