Ok I am going to "bite the bullet" and get the cd's ... but I would like to
know if I can just run Mandrake and not MacOS?? Is that possible on the "new
world" macs?

A little more confusion, the "net*" options at boot kick off the complete
install via net - both stage1 and stage2. To setup stage1 net install,
you need to setup a tftp server that will offer up the kernel and the
stage1 image when the machine boots and asks for an IP addess via bootp..
It's not terribly useful to boot this way from the CD, but was more
included if you were going to put the CD in another machine and boot the
Mac using the "N" key.
You can also goto network install at stage2, after you are offered the
choice of "CD", "Hard Drive", "FTP", "HTTP" or "NFS". At that point, if
you choose any of the last three, stage1 tries to probe the network
adapter then offers a list of modules. On the Macs, they are generally
bmac, gmac, or mace (bmac on both my machines), so try one of these, and
then the install will proceed if it loads, asking for network information.
