Ok, had to do it. I downloaded the two ISO's, wiped out my / ; /usr and all other partitions except /home. Follow the installation in an ibook (first generation) and this is what I have after booting: chose install-novideo (the only one that works) chose the default package instalation (except for the office related packages) added the terminal packages didn't select any extra packages after in individual selection (should've mentioned that I reformated root and /usr in XFS -- prior they were ext3) during install XFree86 failed to install so did filesystem... aside from that, installation went smooth. after rebooting in level 3 the computer stood there waiting forever for a dhcp server to assign the ip's for the network interfaces (i did added my airport, but I'm using my ethernet port, for which I have a dhcp server running locally. not sure if ppp or airport cause this to happen) solve that issue after re-booting (yes, got tired of waiting), made sure that airport was not activated at boot, same for ppp, and didn't use the /etc/init.d/internet init script, just network init script. that solved that . after a little while, kernel panic! the message said: "kernel panic: attempted to kill idle task In idle task - not syncing" right before that it said: "task = c0ld3450[0] "swapper" " whatever that cryptic message means, some folks out there might just know... I didn't have time to copy the whole thing though, there was some stuff about altivec last math before, but since this is a G3, no altivec engine here, so don't know how the kernel handles that when there is no altivec core in the CPU (i know you guys compile the kernels by defaul with altivec support) waited for the computer to reboot (180 seconds) back in the command line inserted the Cd and installed XFree86 and XFree86-server. ran XFdrake to set the right resolution for an ibook (got surprised to see the ibook 800x600 as a choice). assuming it would work, try telinit 5 as root, which of course didn't work (xfs was running); failed don't know why, but check the /etc/sysconfig/desktop to make sure what display manager was the default, it was "kdm" and there were like 8 lines!! seting up the same variable: displaymanager=.... (or whatever the var is, we all know). fixed that, and made sure KDE packages were installed (they all were installed, so were the gnome packages -- i'm mostly a gnome user, but I guess that eventually I will have to switch to KDE and use both :-( ) surprisingly, try telinit 5 again and that didn't work either #@!@#$. check the /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file and so that the needed resolution for an ibook were not set properly :-) the values should be: HorizSync 30.0-40.0 VertRefresh 60.0-70.0 and the magical modeline that does it should be: Modeline "800x600" 39.955 800 856 984 1056 600 601 605 628 +hsync +vsync after trying this, I changed the /etc/sysconfig/desktop display manager variable to use GDM :-) and try telinit 5 again. it worked!
k, finally in X with the right resolution.
try to open evolution and it gave me some cryptic message:
libcamellocal.so could not be loaded...
whatever that was.
opened a ssh connection between this and my main desktop, ran
'evolution' and typed this message...
I hope this helps getting the instalation process to 'final' state and
the release to be over and we can move on to the next set of problems
:-)
p.s. if XFree starts to crap out on me again, then I will have no choice
but to try some other distro that works out of the box. I'm eyeing
Debian next woody release, which I started to peek on yesterday. I guess
it will have to be done eventually, but, I still wanted to give Mandrake
a try since 8.0 was kind of good (maybe better than linuxppc). However,
I guess that's always a choice for us :-) no bitching this time, just a
comment.
