Well I finally got around to spending some time with this bug. Kdesktop fails
to start. Starting kdesktop afterwards makes things functional again. Here's
the error (from .xsession-errors):

description:
KDE desktop is missing desktop icons, background (the default Mandrake wave
background only), and does not show context sensitive menu when right-clicked.
I have tried the following without resolving the problem:
* emptied /tmp
* removed ~/Desktop (which was recreated of course)
* removed .kde (which was also recreated)
This is my first bug report (!! I'm so ashamed!!), so please let me know if I
am doing this wrong. I will read the documentation when I have time.
