Funny you should write just now! Hopefully you'll be able to look at the info
I include here and see what is wrong.

I thought PAM might be part of the problem, and so I deleted all the PAM
entries in /etc/pam and reinstalled all the suppliers of those files from
cooker RPMS. So in theory, I have a 'clean' set of PAM configuration files. I
will confirm if I get time.

I also deleted *all* dotfiles from ~/ as well as all files in ~/tmp and /tmp.
Restarted computer, logged in and .... same problem.

So the problem comes from somewhere else.

Here is my latest .xsession-errors errors:

startkde: Starting up...

Finally, starting kdesktop in the console works fine, merely reporting:

"mcop warning: user defined signal handler found for SIG_PIPE, overriding"

Hope we can get this sorted soon, as my users don't know what to do without
their "floppy" and "cdrom" icons!!!!

Cheers,
Paul.

Oh, and if there's *any* information I can supply which might help...

PD.

KDE desktop is missing desktop icons, background (the default Mandrake wave
background only), and does not show context sensitive menu when right-clicked.

I have tried the following without resolving the problem:

* emptied /tmp
* removed ~/Desktop (which was recreated of course)
* removed .kde (which was also recreated)

This is my first bug report (!! I'm so ashamed!!), so please let me know if I
am doing this wrong. I will read the documentation when I have time.
