I have the same problem running Mandrake 9.1, I also see "could not get user
name from user id" in my .xsession-error when I login as LDAP user, if I login
as local user, kde looks fine.

FYI. gnome and other services are working properly with ldap.. so I am sure ldap
is working.

KDE desktop is missing desktop icons, background (the default Mandrake wave 
background only), and does not show context sensitive menu when right-clicked. 
 
I have tried the following without resolving the problem: 
 
* emptied /tmp 
* removed ~/Desktop (which was recreated of course) 
* removed .kde (which was also recreated) 
 
This is my first bug report (!! I'm so ashamed!!), so please let me know if I 
am doing this wrong. I will read the documentation when I have time.
