OK. I removed the sound-related entries from /etc/modules and modified
/etc/modules.conf so that the sound-related entries are as follows:

# Sound Config
alias /dev/dsp sound-server-0-3
alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-cs4236
alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss
alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss
alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss
alias char-major-116 snd
alias char-major-14 soundcore
options snd snd_major=116 snd_cards_limit=1
options snd_index=1 snd-card-cs4236 snd_port=0x534 \
snd_cport=0x210 snd_mpu_port=0x220 snd_fm_port=0x388 \
snd_irq=5 snd_mpu_irq=7 snd_dma1=1

After reboot, /var/log/syslog show these messages:

Sep 20 10:18:26 localhost kernel: isapnp: Scanning for PnP cards...

Sep 20 10:18:37 localhost alsactl: alsactl: load_state:1134: No soundcards found...
Sep 20 10:18:37 localhost sound: Setting mixer settings failed

[Starting KDE some minutes later, produces these additional messages:]

Sep 20 10:35:50 localhost modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module snd-card-0
Sep 20 10:35:51 localhost last message repeated 15 times
Sep 20 10:35:51 localhost modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module snd-card-1

The IRQ, DMA and io addresses are identical to the W2K settings on the same
machine (where the sound configuration works OK). I should note that before I
started making changes by hand in modules.conf, I tried both alsaconf and
sndconfig. alsaconf did not seem to recognise the sound device at all, while
sndconfig did - but still failing to set up /etc/modules.conf correctly.

This applies to MDK 9.1 beta 3.

System: Dell Precision Workstation 610 MT, dual Pentium II-450MHz with on-board
Crystal sound card. MDK 9.1-B3 does not detect any sound card at all here.
Trying with other Linux distros:

RedHat 8.0: Kudzu finds "new hardware" - CS4236B on first boot after
installation. I didn't get it to work with KDE, though.

SuSE 8.1 Live-Eval (running from demo CD only): finds "new hardware" - Crystal
Multimedia audio controller after logging in on KDE. No sound server connected
to it, though.

Apparently, this sound card has worked on Mandrake distros before, see:

Crystal Semiconductor is owned by Cirrus Logic. Announcement of use of their
chips by Dell here: http://www-test.cirrus.com/en/press/releases/P105.html
