Of course you could put a disclaimer saying something to the effect of:
"If you have a laptop and would desire any of these options to be
enabled:
- SCSI
- Token Ring
- etc....
Please note that the Mandrake laptop kernel does not by default support
these items. There are two possible solutions:
- Install a desktop kernel
- Install the laptop kernel and kernel source and recompile the
kernel to support these things."
Especially in the case of the netowrk administrator, I would certainly
hope that they can compile their own kernels, at least if they were
admin'ing any systems that I would want to use... ;o)

See above, with modified option list, substituting laptop and desktop
for each other.
Again, only in Expert Mode would the question "Which Kernel do you want
to use?" be asked. It would be really nice if the user could click to a
documenting summarizing the differences between kernels.
Maybe this could even metamorphose into a "Kernel Selection Wizard"
which would ask questions like "Do you have multiple processors?", "Is
this computer a laptop, desktop, or server?", etc.
