I got this error with a recompiled version of kernel-source-2.4.18-6mdk, where I set CONFIG_SMB_NLS_REMOTE wrongly to iso8859-1. After reset to cp850 (or like in std. kernel to cp437) it's fine, again. With (smb)mount with codepage=iso8859-1 I could also reproduce this error, see the kernel message below. So, for the case of wrong codepage selection, it is definitely a bug. I wonder, if Brad's situation/problem is the same. Ralf.
