Aha!  Great Progress!

I commented out in /etc/modules.conf:

# alias sound-slot-0 es1371
# above snd-ens1371 snd-pcm-oss

Then rebooted, opened a root terminal and ran draksound.
Afterwards /etc/modules.conf contained:

alias sound-slot-0 snd-ens1371
above snd-ens1371 snd-pcm-oss

See the difference?

This looks like a Mandrake installer fault.   What is the difference 
between the es1371 and snd_ens1371 modules?   Are they both necessary?

The upside:

Now KMid works, animated channels display and all!

The downside:

BUT no sound comes out of KMix's PCM channel <sob>, no matter which of 
the four installed MIDI maps I choose, including 'none'.

Playing an mp3 through kaboodle works well through the mixer's PCM channel.

Any clues, anyone??
