Aha! Great Progress!
I commented out in /etc/modules.conf:
# alias sound-slot-0 es1371
# above snd-ens1371 snd-pcm-oss
Then rebooted, opened a root terminal and ran draksound.
Afterwards /etc/modules.conf contained:
alias sound-slot-0 snd-ens1371
above snd-ens1371 snd-pcm-oss
See the difference?
This looks like a Mandrake installer fault. What is the difference
between the es1371 and snd_ens1371 modules? Are they both necessary?
The upside:
Now KMid works, animated channels display and all!
The downside:
BUT no sound comes out of KMix's PCM channel <sob>, no matter which of
the four installed MIDI maps I choose, including 'none'.
Playing an mp3 through kaboodle works well through the mixer's PCM channel.
Any clues, anyone??
