This is a known problem with Linux kernel versions 2.4.18 and 2.4.19: the
HPT372 is not adequately supported, even though it is recognized. A
proprietary driver is available from HPT's Web site, and it works, but
it's awkward to install.
I did the procedure, how did you manage the inclusion at boot stage ?
I can insmod them after the booting process and it works quite well (as

What I do is to put hpt37x2.o in
/lib/modules/<version>/kernel/drivers/ide/raid,

Done

run depmod -a, and

Not done (i forgot it)

append 'hpt37x2' to /etc/modules: echo hpt37x2 >> /etc/modules

Thanks a lot for the help.

I only have a single, jbod drive on that controller with a line for it in fstab and it is mounted automatically at boot.
/dev/sda5 /backup reiserfs defaults 1 2
