I was just about to write in to the list about this very same topic. I over cooked some fudge today because I can't seem to do the softball coldwater test. So I ended up with crystallized stuff.
I can't remember where I got it, but I have a tactile candy thermometer; however, it apparently doesn't work anymore because it stopped moving at about 175 degrees, and then began the guessing. LOL So now I don't want to try again just yet out of frustration and wasted ingredients.
