Yep use a bigger bowl for sure. Always do it this way too.

I use those oatmeal envelopes and use a large ceramic bowl with high sides.
The bowl is much larger than I need, but I don't have to worry about it

Yes! That happened to me a few times. If you are using the to go oatmeal
cups, you might either transfer it to a larger sized cereal bowl, and put
no
more water than is recommended into it before preparing. If you get too
much
water, this spew over occurs. It might be a tad thicker than you prefer,
so
when done, you can add more warm milk or warm water and stir in while on
the
table. I hated when that happened!
Watch your liquid amount!
I also have had it happen when I made the envelopes in a cereal bowl;
getting the liquid level precisely measured is the key to success.
