I like potatoes for mashing steamed instead of boiled -- they keep more of their nutrients that way and still come out just as soft. I put them in a steamer on the stove or a countertop steamer for about 25 minutes. If I use a countertop steamer then the water in the catch tray goes back into the potatoes to keep all the nutrition in the recipe.
