Bob; Have you considered covering the light openings with Lexan, or Plexiglas? A gasket around the periphery would provide a tight seal, and you could fasten # 6 nut plates on the inside to hold everything together. That sort of arrangement should fall under the "as good as or better" than original from the FARs. Its just a thought, but would provide an interesting weekend project.
