I did think about covering the opening and that would have been a good course. The raw edge of the opening was rolled over which is correct to control cracking but makes covering more difficult.
I am generally satisfied with the way things are now but if I were installing light s on the plane I would put them into the leading edge of the wing. If the wing were a clean laminar design then the cowl would be the first choice.
