This is one of those "some people do whatever they can get away with" items. You will see everything from IA's that won't tolerate any addition at all without a 337, to those who pay not one bit of attention to what's mounted up there. I would definitely avoid the cheaper non-TSO gauges as they tend to be plastic-cased junk. I would also avoid anything that must use any kind of non-TSO sender attached to your engine because some of them are not up to standard.
