I do it even solo (I'm 128# today) in '387, which is a relative rocket-ship as Koops go. (With just me aboard it still has 300FPM climb left with full fuel at 9500 feet on a standard day.) I learned to do it on a mountain-flying checkout in a normally-aspirated A36 Bonanza coming out of Granby, CO. As the CFI said: 'When God gives you a gift, it's impolite not to take it. All in all, if you let a good thermal do the job for you, you *will* get there quicker, even though your instinct is to point the nose towards the next way point.' Only problem is, I really suck at staying in them. They're so badly marked :-) And I never quite know if they petered out or if I just lost my way. Time to go get that sailplane rating, I guess. A lot of times, when you come out of an airport around here, you'll see a stack of raptors somewhere. If you can join them without hitting them, you'll go up.
