What bugs me is why throw away the VSI?
This instrument shows your climb and sink tendency, sure with some lag,
but it displays it.

A Horizontal Gyro shows you only the angle of your Aircraft in relation to
your initial point when you
turned on the Gyro.
It does not indicated whether you climb or sink! Just by displaying the
angle in the horizon one can
only guess on the sink rate,
You also might be in down drafts or up drafts and have your AC perfectly
level being drafted down....
You guys might come to your own conclusions.
