And remember the Continental 75/85 was certified on 73 octane gasoline. I have been using auto gas since EAA got tjhe STC mid 80's, I think------ and have had no problem until recently.
After letting the coupe sit for several months withoput flying, I acquired a greeen goo on the underside sif the fuel tank caps..... II sent samples to Amoco - they were not intrested... I think I got a contaminated dose of gasoline /deisel fuel.... ???? and picked up algae growth that affects Jet fuels....There are additives to Jet fuels to prevent this growth..... After cleaning, and replacing with 100LL ( Ssomeone suggested that 100 LL also has some of the "poison ' in it to kill algae, I haven't had any more problems...... I evaluated several lead free gasolines for water "pick =up" and found that Amoco had the least water pick up.... Even Av100LL absorbed considerable water.....so I have been using Amoco Ultamate - until this problem arose....The water absorption test involves carefully marking a glass container, adding water to the line; agasoline, cap and shake.. Then let settle and compare the water level with the mark. If there is absorption the water level will be below the mark. This usually indicates there is alcohol in the fuel, which mixes with water.....With AV 100LL there was about a 1/4 " mixture that took a long time to finally separate. With Amoco Ultamate, the demarcation was immediate, with no absorption. I did these tests years age, and all the gasolines have probably changed........ Any way IO got a fungus/algae somewhere... Green goo in draining the sumps.... Fly Safe - Have Fun Regards, Harry 93530 Blacksburg, Va.
