Rob,

Probably nothing wrong with the stromberg....

The mixture control DOES NOT HAVE AN IDLE CUT OFF POSITION. iT IS
PROPER TO
TURN OFF THE ENGINE USING THE IGNITION SWITCH.

If the carb is running rich it is probably due to the mnixture control
being
stopped up.

On top of the carb, you will find three screws (safetied) that hold the
mmixture control assy in place. They can be removed with a 90 deg
screewdriver if you are careful.... Slip out the assy, and you will find
a
disc with three different size holes.

Clean the holes, and reassemble. I would expect this is the problem....not
unusual.

The air cleaner is inefficient especially if one does not "oil" it on
annual.

The other potential problem is a leaking float needle. I gasoline drips
out of
the carb with the engine shut down, then the float valve is leaking....
and
needs to be replaced....The leaking float valve would allow excess fuel in
the
engine causing it to run rich, also...... Have to leak pretty bad to cause
much of a problem, unless the engine is idled long periods....

Most coupe (stromberg ) mixture controls are wired "full rich", as
leaning is
only effective once you exceed 5000feet.... I hooked mine up so I could
lean,
but found I could not tell any differefnce in the altitudes I generally
fly,
so I removed the cable, and again wired it full rich.....

It is a good carb, but no accelerator pump, so you should open the
throttle
slowly, to prevent hesitation. By using the igniytion switch to turn the
engine off, you assure that the mags are not hot......I see that as a
benefit,
not a problem.
