Jon, Sounds like you put a few hours of thought into your modification. I mentioned a carburetor intake heat on another list and was laughed at out loud. It would seem that | everything wide open would cool better, but if you just fill the cowling | up with air, it may well not have enough movement to cool the real hot | spots. I have designed and installed a unit that introduces some warm | air to the carb intake just ahead of the carb. I removed the hose that | goes to the firewall heater connection and run it through a shut off | flapper that is operated by cable from the dash. It introduces warm air | in the air intake funnel just behind the air filter. After installing a | carb temp gauge, I can monitor carb temp and any change the "new heat", | as I call it, makes. To my suprise there was no heat rise when I applied | the "new heat". This is where pressure differential comes in. The | compressing effect of the intake funnel actually pushed the air | backwards. The solution may sound bizzare, but it works on this coupe as | it did on my last one. By putting a cover plate over the air intake with | a 2" hole inthe middle, stops the ram air effect of the funnel intake. I | have about 1/2" between the funnel and the front cowling. Even with the | front intake completely blocked off the engine would get enough air. I | have killed two birds with one stone with this setup, the "new heat" now | gives me about a 6 to 8 degree heat rise with no peceptable RPM loss. It | also gives me a cushion of safty for carb ice when in marginal | conditions. It does not affect the use of carb heat, which is still in | reserve, when needed. This setup seems to have completely eliminated the | sudden loss of power that this coupe and my first one suffered from. | Quite a large number of coupers have told me of the exact same | problem.Mostly it is put down to carb ice, when my research shows it is | realy the design of the intake funnel which tends to force too much air | into the carb in relation to what the main jet can supply. What more | can I say, except that it works and the coupe now flys happily at any | throttle setting. All this rambling was brought on by your thoughts on | pressure differential! I am NOT recommending this fix to anyone. I'm | just saying it really worked for me. I'm sure this letter will drive the | old diehards wild, --"don't mess with what doesn't work". I also do not | have to deal with the FAA. | | | Jon Page. | FLAK MAGNET. | CANADA. | | | | ==^================================================================ EASY UNSUBSCRIBE click here: http://topica.com/u/?aVxiLm.aVzvvT Or send an email To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] This email was sent to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] T O P I C A -- Register now to manage your mail! http://www.topica.com/partner/tag02/register ==^================================================================
