The leak has not been severe and only requires adding a quart every three hours or so but appears to be getting more severe. Since the engine purportedly (according to very questionable log entries!) has only about 700 hours since oveerhaul I'd like to avoid having another total overhaul (dictated further by distinctly limited funds). One individual suggested having the case "split" and resealed or whatever one does to put the case together again while another says that only a total overhaul will solve the problem (engine problem.... not financial problem) I'd appreciate any input from some of you experienced coupers who may have encountered a similar problem and found a method of rectifying it..... also any suggestions as to where such a "fix" can be accomplished. I'm located in Montgomery, Alabama. Thanks in advance for any help and HAPPY NEW YEAR! HERB /smaller>/fontfamily>
I found a similar problem with my engine. During the overhaul
the seal (silk thread) was placed on the outside of the bolt
holes, thus the oil leaked from the bolt holes.
A tip, not aircraft approved, is to visit your local Ford Dealer.
Ford has had a problem with oil leaks from their new diesel engines
in their F250 trucks. To stop the leak required that the engine be
removed from the truck. This is quite expensive. Thus, Ford
developed a harding silicone sealant. Kind of like caulk, but
it will set up rather hard and will seal even if there is some
oil present.
So: Get some of this, I'll get you a part number if you need
it. It cost about $25.00 for a tube.
1 - Remove the cowling (It will make it much easier to work).
2 - Clean the engine as good as possible.
(Use Easy Off Kitchen Cleaner or Mineral Spirts
and a compressed air cleaner.)
3 - Dry the area with compressed air.
4 - Use this caulk to seal the cracks. (Follow the
directions on the tube.)
It does work.
Sorry to hear that you are located in Montgomery. I can't
do anything about that. :-) If you want to fly up to
NC someday, we'll fix that leak.
