Herb,

I developed a leak though several of the studs that hold the
case together, not the case split itself. It was possible to
re-seal the studs.

My initial response was to speak with my IA and with the
overhauler and they both thought that "splitting the case"
would be my ultimate solution. I came to understand that
what that meant was completely disassembling the engine, but
only replacing seals and gaskets and not doing some of the
things which would be done during an overhaul - it would
still be a $3,000 + job.

I would suggest that if you have not yet done so, first be
absolutely sure where the leak is coming from. Wash the
engine thoroughly with solvent and thoroughly dry it. Then,
fly for an hour and do a very careful inspection of what has
oil on it. You may be surprised to find that it is not the
split itself, which supposedly is not too common on
Continentals. There was a good article on this very subject
this month in "Light Aircraft Maintenance" magazine.

If the problem is the studs, I may be able to suggest an
inexpensive solution.
