I don't remember which brand is which but, one major brand
of vacuum pump has canted vanes and the case is marked with
direction of rotation.  It can be damaged with reverse
rotation.  The other brand has straight vanes and is
unmarked; you may turn it either way.

If your coupe has a Marvel carb, you should be stopping the
engine with the mixture control.  Leaving the mixture at
idle cutoff plus having the mags off provides redundancy
against an accidental start.
