One of the VERY nice things about our ol' fashioned airplanes is that it's
possible 
to turn the engine over with the mags off, because the mags are (properly)
not on
the same switch as the starter.

If you have a good battery, and you want to swing it through a few blades
before 
starting, it makes great good sense to leave the mags off and pull the
starter 
handle.

Of course, you should holler 'clear' and be on the brakes, because with a
bad
P lead, it might start. Better it happens with you in the cockpit, though.
