This is a joke, right? Like the sawdust? I buy Shell Aeroshell oil from a local distributer for just $19 a case. Why scrimp on the cheap stuff? Same with hardware. I believe any owner-pilot that's going to be involved in the maintenece of their aircraft should learn about the different kinds of hardware, how to identify them, and build a good collection. Hit the fleamakets, AC factories, etc and you can really save a bunch, but by all means, use the proper stuff. After a while, you'll have a good collection in your box to choose from when you need that bolt or screw, it'll be the proper one and it'll be as cheap as junk from the hardware store. I definately qualify as being as thrifty and poor as anyone (I'm a musician, fer gawds sake). Ive been stung a few times too, and there certainly are a few crooks out there. Perhaps some of these guys are used to restoring warbirds for cardiologists, etc, where the customers don't look too closely at the bill. I've also heard the same types of horror stories from guys that deal with King Airs and Citations, etc. where the stakes are much higher. I certainly don't think these "bad apples" are the majority, and as a guy who loves aviation I also admire the skill and knowledge of a fine mechanic, and enjoy their company. If you befriend the right guy, someone who is proud of their work and whom you respect, you can learn an awful lot. Overall, I've had MUCH better luck with airplane mechanics than I have had with girlfriends, and they haven't cost me NEARLY as much - but I haven't given up yet there either.
