Sue,

A member of our Board of Directors of the New England Helicopter Council is a vice president of a large insurance company who writes a lot of aviation insurance. Here is a synopsis of a longer report he made to our Board.

He said that losses have exceeded premiums for a while and that aviation insurers are looking for ways to regain their profitability (After all they do have to report to their stockholders). In order to do this they have looked at several options including leaving the aviation insurance market, restricting classes of business underwritten and limits of liability, raising deductibles and premioun levels.

We small business operators are the one who are taking the hit. His suggestion was to contact our insurance advisors, yet be prepared for increased costs and limits of liability. As a Robinson helicpter operator I've joined a program aimed specifically at R22 and R44 owners and operators. We have a fairly large pool and that has kept our costs down somewhat and our limits higher. I would suggest that small business owners and operators get together and form their own pool.

Anne

I had problems last year maintaining same insurance level. Only one company agreed to write the same policy and their rates increased 30%, but would limit the increase to 10% for current customers.
