Doesn't Skyport have a proper, approved, metal gascolator
retrofit kit?

I use a GATS jar.(That's the thingambob with the filter screen that
lets you put the gas back in the tank after you look at it, and
even gets the crud and the water out. Heck a half pint of fuel at
3 bucks a gallon is worth saving, not to mention the good airport
owner's tarmac and the ground water.

Another good reason for using it is that I like to drain a LOT
of fuel through the gascolator before flying. Heard much about
crud that accumulates in the header. Maybe it's superstition,
maybe the crud can't be got at that well anyway. But hell,
it makes me feel better. The GATS jar has a big (14oz)
capacity, and I turn on the fuel and let 'er rip. Often as not,
I fill that jar.

I can't imagine flying without draining all the drains first. In
fact, I've had an 'oh shit' experience after not draining the
wing sumps before just taxiing ("I'm not going to fly, why
worry?") after realizing I'd maybe just sucked any crap that was
in the bottom of the wing tanks right up into the header
tank. Dumb. Stupid. Idiot. Dumb. With 20/20 hindsight.

After about 60 days on the ground (winter) I put sandbags
on the tail and drained two full gallons out of the header
via the gascolator before I even thought of starting the
engine in early March.

Again, this may do no real good due to the crud accuming
in the lower corner of the tank. But it keeps my blood from
running so damned cold thinking about it.

But jeez, you have to open the cowling anyway to look at the
engine. That's one of the (many) things that makes Ercoupes
better than 150's... ....you can look at the engine. So why
wouldn't you drain the gascolator?
