Do you really think it is inevitable to >need a new crank? That sounds really expensive. What made you think >yours might need an overhaul? Everyone I've talked to who has overhauled anything from a C65 to an 0-300 lately has seemed to need one. The shops all said, 'usually, we have to replace the crank.' So I guess that the years have caught up with the cranks. I had a real scare. Just after I bought the plane, bronze, a lot of it, showed up in the oil filter. Well, it turned out that the starter clutch bushing had perished. Or rather, the thin bushing that someone had put inside a worn bushing had perished. The shaft it runs on was rather rough, also, and that can't be replaced without cracking the case, whereupon you have to look at... ...you know. Anyway, I got a replacement cluthch from Niagra Air Parts, and after 20 hours we chopped open the filter again and found only a little expected residual bronze.
