I have had three events of vapor lock before I corrected the problem. Two
occoured with 100LL and one with mogas. All events happened with the
engine compartment hot and during low speed operation.

When the engine compartment is hot, the fuel in the line from the firewall
to the gascolator becomes hot enough to form bubbles. In a low speed
climb or slow flight attitude, the fuel tank is not much above the height
of the carburator. In this situation the engine can vapor lock if there
is a high spot in the fuel line between the firewall and the carb. There
is no way for the bubble to vent throught either the tank or carb. The
engine woll sputter, loose power and the nowe will drop. When the nose
drops, the bubble can vent and power will be restored.

The cure is to make sure that there is no high spot in the fuel line that
can trap a bubble in a nose high attitude.

Good luck,
Bob Condon
