While I agree that most Coupe pilots meet the definition of 'Sport Pilot' as it makes sense, so do most RV4 and Citabria pilots. As easy as it is for a 'real' pilot to fly, I'm not sure if the Ercoupe really met its implicit goal of being a great plane for people with relatively poor flying skills. Tales of 5-hour solos notwithstanding, an Ercoupe can jump up and bite you. In particular, it is susceptible to poor airspeed control on final approach, it demands a somewhat higher approach speed than the Cessna trainers (remember when you were a student and a 60MPH normal approach seemed to be over before you were ready?). Also, the relatively light and effective controls mean that a ham-handed pilot can get himself in a bit of trouble down close to the ground. So I'm content to keep the bar at the skill level of PP-ASEL or Recreational Pilot to fly our birds. It seems to me to be the right level. On the other hand, planes like the Kitfox and Fisher Classic DO seem to meet the definition, and, being taildraggers, are more demanding during ground maneuvers than the Ercoupe. So I'm a bit baffled about what is really being accomplished.
