It was a great day here in northern Michigan for an opportunity to turn fuel  into noise, so I seized the chance.

I am concerned about the ERCOUPE'S carb ice potential, so I was watching closely for it.

When I pulled full carb heat, and throttled back to enter the pattern, the engine got pretty rough.  I kept full carb heat, hoping that it would clear.  I was close enough to the runway that I was sure that I could make it if things got real bad.  The landing was great, but when I advanced the throttle, the engine almost died.  I was able to taxi to the FBO  but the engine was running VERY rough.  I couldn't figure out why the carb heat wasn't clearing things up.

I finally realized what was going on,  THE PRIMER WAS NOT IN THE LOCKED POSITION.  I had a discussion about this with the mechanic at the FBO and he showed me how if the primer is not locked, it will dump raw fuel into the carb, especially with the throttle partially closed, causing a very rich mixture.

I have been told that it is important to lock it, but this is the first time that I experienced the consequences caused by it.

So next time the 'PUCKER FACTOR" is great enough that I'm sucking naugahide, I'll check the PRIMER.

Just thought that I would pass this on to remind everyone how important EVERY LITTLE THING is to flight.
