Actually, I often leave it unlocked in cold weather, because it will enrichen
the mixture.  As soon as the engine runs well, it starts to lope due to too
rich, and I lock it.  Checking for locked primer is part of my pre-takeoff
checklist (C-I-Gas(tanks, selector, mixture, primer LOCKED) -A-R
