I was first taught that 'Primer Locked' was part of the pre start-up checklist. Now, I *HAVE* had CFIs recommend leaving the primer out after the last pre-start stroke, so that it might be pushed in to aid in a balky start, while the engine is turning over. So when the occasional CFI has said 'you can just leave the primer out in case you need it again' I've always said 'I make it a personal practice never to do that.' I always thought it an unwise practice. In the first place, you shouldn't be cranking away on the starter long enough to be shoving the primer in to squirt fuel in. If you think you haven't primed enough, then stop cranking, prime again, and then realize that you've in fact *flooded* the engine and never should have done that. <grin> In the second place, and more importantly, it is too easy in the din of an engine start, to forget to lock that primer. That leads to a sloppy rich mixture on the ground (not good) and possibly to an accident. So my checklist says "Prime --- primer locked" before it says "Clear Prop" Greg At 11:04 AM 11/27/00 -0800, John Cooper wrote: >----[Please read ><http://ercoupers.com/disclaimer.htm>http://ercoupers.com/disclaimer.htm >before following any advice in this forum.]---- >but if the Primer "o" ring has deteriorated, >and leaks, even when locked, it may cause a rich mixture Just to keep y'all honest, the "lock" mechanism is independent of the o-rings and blocks the port where fuel enters the primer. (Or is it where it leaves?) Add "Primer locked" to the "Gas" part of your check list...
