did exactly the same thing in my Stinson
a few years back

rightseater was a senior captain for United Airlines that I
was checking out  -- 
in the airplane, guys, in the airplane !!

what a thrill, to be checkout pilot for someone like that!
he had considerable P51 time so I wasn't worried ...

we had (although we didn't know it at the time) the primer
come unlocked at altitude

checked, we thought, everything ... to figure out what was
causing the rough engine

but missed the primer

made it back to the airport safely (it kept running even while
taxiing)

didn't catch it until we tried to start it again
after checking "everything" once again after 
shutting it down

so even the ATPs miss things ...
