Good Morning Craig,
I most certainly agree with everything that Larry says. When things
start getting a little sloppy or
out of sorts, the best thing to do is step back and look at your overall
procedure (back to basics).
Remember what your first CFI told you about 'pattern set-up'.
Like Larry said, the pattern should be the same 'every time'. Enter
at a 45 degree into your downwind
at the same place, same speed and same altitude. Turn base at the same
place and altitude and again adjust
your speed, same thing on final and aim at the same point for touchdown.
You can do a series of 'touch-n-go's' they don't have to be full
stops every time. If you are still
to fast, next time reduce your speeds by 5 mph on each leg. If you still
feel to fast, reduce it by
another 5 mph on the next go around, etc.
After you find (as Larry said) what feels 'right for you' do it a
couple of more times and be sure that
you have it down to a routine that works every time.
Now, leave the pattern and go out and fly around for a few minutes to
'relax'. Then come back into the
pattern on your 45 and do the rest of the pattern in the same way as you
were earlier and see if you can
still 'ace' it. Aim for the same spot on the runway every time and before
long you'll be the best
'pattern-pilot' on the field (as long as Larry and I aren't on your field)
<G>.
Just one word of warning, when you are reducing your speeds don't get
'toooo' slow on your final. It's
better land a little long than a little short.
Again, as Larry said, all speeds and headings must be adjusted
according to winds, but if you get
'really good' in a no wind situation, then all you have to think about are
the minor adjustments as
everything else will now be 'habit' to you.
Have you ever heard about "the most dangerous 7 minutes of flight"?
(Did you notice that they're all in
the pattern?)

More likely, you have a problem
