  That you have a trim tab that has passed annual inspections is not
too suprising.  I have yet to get dinged for the same thing two
owner-assisted annuals in a row.  Maybe if I used the same IA...
  If that trim tab is not giving you any trouble, I'd check with
the Coupe Capers to see if there is a 337 that covers such.  Then
modify it to fit your installation and get it signed, sealed and 
to the FAA.  Then you're set.
  Yes, the insurance companies are that slick.  They are in business
of collecting premiums, not paying claims.  The longer they can keep
the money, the better they like it.  Of course, they gotta pay off
sometimes.  Like when "innocent" people are hurt.  THen getting out
on a technicality could be bad PR = get `em in trouble with the state
insurance commission.  Too much trouble and you can't do business in
that state!  I used to work with an automotive insurance claim adjustor
and he informed me `bout how it all works.  He owned a plane at one
time, too.  Not a `coupe.
