Rings are not something to mess with because breaks can cuse a lot
of damage to the cylinders. It you don't have a broken ring when you
take a cylinder off that has been in service for a while and it doesn't
have a broken ring and you put the same rings back in at least one will
probably break. Why? because when you pull the cylinder off the rings
have to be pulled past the lower wear step which can put a lot of stress
on the lower ring and cause it to crack either now or later. We always
make it a habit to newer re-use rings that have been in service.
Another consideration when you take off a cylinder is did you hone the
cylinder and use the break in procedure specified by continental?
Properly rebreaking in removed cylinders is important to proper ring
seating and oil consumption.
