For example, say you have a web-based application using mysql or
postresql already...using the corresponding courier authentication
allows the application and the mail system to be tightly coupled. (this
is actually why I'm working on getting mysql support working).  Yes, the
various authentication modules have their pros/cons but to cover them in
this type of forum would be a bit too dense.  If you have a couple you
know you are considering maybe let us know and we can elaborate on
those.  If you are open to any of them...do some google'ing to learn
about them.

Why store mail in a database?  There are a number of performance issues
with this.  I don't think courier supports database implementations of
mailboxes.
