Not to insult your intelligence, but did you make sure that xinetd is actually 
running?  (It's always the little things that trip me up! :-)  Then check to 
see that the sgi_fam service is turned on in the xinetd configs.  Check 
in /etc/xinetd.d/sgi_fam (or where ever your xinetd services live) and make 
sure that the "disable" line says "no"
