I run the same configuration since a few months. One mailserver, ditched the backup MXes for the same reasons stated here. I have had troubles with mail (o.a. mail server crashed while I was on holiday, it was down for two days). The main issue is that mailinglists can be quite sensitive. You will loose mailinglist mail. Other than that no big problems occur. The sending servers do exactly the same function as your backup MX would, they store the mail for a reasonable time and notify the sender if it cannot be delivered.


I greatly recommend dropping all backup MXes you cannot lock down like your primaries.
