Did you have a look at http://code.google.com/p/courier-pythonfilters-ldap/ ? I've made some efforts so it handles both plain text and HTML mail from Thunderbird and MS Outlook properly. I've heard that some MS Outlook versions mess up body decoding if the "Subject:" MIME header uses a different charset than the body, but weren't able to reproduce it no the MS Outlook version I have.
