In my case, such an error means authdaemond actually does not run. Did you 
verify it really runs? Looks stupid, but needs to be checked...

If you installed courier packages and copied configuration files from another 
machine, usually running all courier make* commands is needed, I do it 
regularly after upgrades. This ensures *.dat files are in sync their 
respective text sources.
