Have the directory in /var/run/authdaemond/. I don't have the socket.

Hmmmmm Thanks I think that we are closer.

/var/run/authdaemond/socket: Cross-device link

# ls -l /var/run/authdaemond/
total 2
-rw-r--r-- 1 root courier 6 Oct 19 09:03 pid
-rw------- 1 root courier 0 Oct 19 09:03 pid.lock
srwxrwxrwx 1 root courier 0 Oct 19 09:03 socket.tmp

The log file shows.:
Oct 20 13:25:59 ec authdaemond: modules="authldap", daemons=5
Oct 20 13:25:59 ec authdaemond: Installing libauthldap
Oct 20 13:25:59 ec authdaemond: Installation complete: authldapOct 20
13:25:59 ec authdaemond: /var/run/authdaemond/socket: Cross-device link

Whatever a Cross-device link means, It doesn't sound good. I have
checked google but didn't find anything that I could understand that
might help.

I don't seem to have that on either of my servers. I have:

/root # ls -l /usr/local/sbin/courieresmtpd
/usr/local/libexec/courier/modules/esmtp/courieresmtpd
-r-xr-x--- 1 courier courier 48824 Mar 26 2010
/usr/local/libexec/courier/modules/esmtp/courieresmtpd
lrwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 54 Mar 26 2010
/usr/local/sbin/courieresmtpd ->
/usr/local/libexec/courier/modules/esmtp/courieresmtpd

All except configuration files which I have used diff to compare them
to the configuration on the working server. They are the same.

Thanks for your help. Now I have to try and understand what
"/var/run/authdaemond/socket: Cross-device link" means.

Sorry for not looking for the obvious.
