Agreed.  Possibly a silly question... are you sure it's running?

This seems courieresmtpd trying to connect to authdaemond's socket. 
When authdaemond is running, you should have a directory called 
"authdaemon", possibly in /var/courier/spool, containing a file named 
"socket" (a socket, actually).

courieresmtpd should be dynamically linked with libcourierauth, so the 
socket names should match.

You probably checked you don't have leftovers of different versions, 
didn't you?
