When authdaemond is running, you should have a directory called "authdaemon", possibly in /var/courier/spool, containing a file named "socket" (a socket, actually). courieresmtpd should be dynamically linked with libcourierauth, so the socket names should match. You probably checked you don't have leftovers of different versions, didn't you?
