Aaron, marxists don't think that the capitalist system is amenable to
change, positive to ecological balance and renewal. This is what has
been proven in the past. Every new technological advance has just
been incorporated into the overall destructive process. This has led
to a speedup of ecological destruction, not a solution to it.
Elites do not make things better for others in their efforts to stay in
power. Far from that, they make total misery for the rest of us, as
they hide behind their fortified palaces. And they will continue to
do so, even as they don special suits to maintain life in a super
contaminated atmosphere. I would not see this as mere science
fiction or speculative fantasy. It may be what comes to be, if class
society continues to be sustained.

Tony, in the long run I am sure you are correct. But I think the
solutions to the crisis we are facing need to be addressed as soon as
possible, which means we need to start the ball rolling within a
capitalist system. If we wait until things are so bad that the system
falls apart of its own accord then we will be inheriting a planet that
makes the mess we already have look like a paradise, and thus our
options would be much more constrained.
I think that the capitalist structure is amenable to change, that has
been proven in the past. Elites do what they have to in order to
maintain power, even if that means making life better for others. Of
course they also will take these things back when they perceive the
threat to be over. So my hope is that we can make positive changes in
the here and now while also looking towards the future in which we can
change the fundamental power relations in society.

Sincerely, Aaron
