Hi Aaron, I don't want to drive you to 'a return to an alcohol and drug
induced stupor' or a 'random act of violence', but the future is pretty
grim.
These 'gains' you talk about, are in the process of being done away with
in the industrialized north. Remember what it took to put the
'fear' into the ruling elites when these social gains of the past were
made
It would be a disaster to force reform from the capialist ruling classes
again, while still falling short of removing them entirely from power.
Many on this list have focused on how wayward the Soviet Union went, and
do not want a repeat of this. But what about the failure of the
Social Democrats' reform of capitalism. What a miserable thing to
try to keep emulating.
Reduced to its essence, the Social Democratic mindset is the
following..... Let the sewers run over in the streets a block over, let
savage dogs run wild attacking the children, let hunger reign supreme on
those folks..... just as long as this block-OUR BLOCK- stays tidy,
clean, orderly, and peaceful.
If the many list members find marxism to be a stale, old, boring routine
of those lost in the past..... think about it for a second. How much
more stale, boring , and irrelevant is the traditional Social Democrat
(or liberal) scurrying for their infinitesimal reforms by way of voting
a 'good' candidate in. This incremental mindset is a sure disaster
of doing absolutely nothing.
At least an honest marxist approach offers you the possiblity of drug
and alcohol induced stupor. Take advantage of the theoretical
possibilities! Now get going!

<Tony, many advances have been made in the past within a capitalist
system, at least in the industrialized north. To name just a few - the 8
hour work week, universal medical care [the US is the exception not the
rule among wealthy nations], universal old age pensions, the right to
collective bargaining, a minimum wage, the abolition of chlorine in the
pulp and paper industry[western Europe], the clean air act[US], the end
of clearcut logging in old growth forests[Canada],etc.
All of these things took long hard years of
struggle to obtain, and many are under attack. But the point is that all
of these things were opposed by elites before, during and after they
were implemented. If a large enough group of people puts enough pressure
on, they will make a difference. Fear has long forced those in power to
capitulate to the demands of the people, even when that capitulation
means a chunk out of the bottom line.
If I believed you, then I may just as well
return to an alcohol and drug induced stupor, showing my displeasure
with the current state of affairs through random acts of violence.
Because a socialist revolution is not yet at hand, not even close.>
Aaron.
